  • WALKING SHADOWS

Things have been different for Lissa Wilson since she befriended Gary Hooper. While he’s sweet in his own geeky way, he is also a vampire and has a tendency to bring her things like severed hands. Then there’s his undead acquaintances; the elderly but terrifying Magdalene, the charming Thomas and gorgeous but brutal Mundy. If they haven’t yet bitten Lissa, they’ve tried to.

Right now, they’ve got bigger things on their minds. Someone is hunting Melbourne’s undead community and Lissa needs to find out who before they target Gary.

Walking Shadows grabs attention from the first line. The writing is distinctive, keeping a light tone that lends itself well to the humour of the novel. Though this is the second book in the GeekVamp series, it stands very well on its own. At times the backstory from the first novel congests the description enough to draw attention away from the current story; but mostly it fits in smoothly. The characters are the point around which all things turn in Walking Shadows. Lissa’s unlikely but close friendship with Gary keeps the plot moving, and is one of the things that I really enjoyed here. There are many kinds of love in the world and Shadows reflects this, building its foundation on friendships and family rather than romance. It was good to read a book where the main character had a wealth of support around them. Lissa’s sister, friends and co-workers are all well-rounded characters that add depth to the story.
