Anna Sewell (1820-1878) was a British writer who had a strong love for horses and became quite sensitive to their nature and behaviour. After a childhood injury, she was confined to her house as an invalid and got around largely by horse-drawn carriages. Though, she had difficulty in walking, she could drive a carriage. She spent her last years writing the children’s classic Black Beauty (1877), a fictional autobiography of a gentle, highbred horse. She died just five months after her book was published.
