CIVIL RIGHTS IN PERIL
Muslims and Arab-Americans are increasingly under attack as a result of the U.S. “war on terror” — at home, as well as abroad. Since the tragic events of September 11, Arab and Muslim Americans have faced a major assault on their civil liberties. While targeting vulnerable groups and drawing on racist sterotypes about Arabs and Muslims, these measures threaten millions of people, including immigrants, activists, trade unionists, academics, writers, and anyone who the government wishes to define as a “threat” to national security. The Patriot Act and new immigration laws primarily aimed at Muslims and Arabs have greatly expanded federal powers and eroded longstanding civil liberties. The U.S. government has used its expanded powers to detain, deport, and try individuals, at times without access to lawyers or full disclosure of evidence and charges used against them. Civil Rights in Peril seeks to expose the impact of these new governmental powers on Muslims and Arabs, as well as other groups and individuals targeted as a part of the Bush administration’s “war on terror,” and to show how ordinary people can resist these attacks on our fundamental rights. This powerful anthology, edited by the well-known scholar and activist Elaine Hagopian, includes essays by Samih Farsoun, Naseer Aruri, Susan Akram, Nancy Murray, Robert Morlino, and William Youmans.

RETHINKING WAR AND PEACE
Is war ever a just way to resolve conflict? Diana Francis argues that it is not. With passion and eloquence, she mounts a head-on challenge to the belief that war as an institution is either necessary or effective for good. Refuting the notion that human nature condemns us to perpetual carnage, she argues that we can change the ways we think and the systems we live by. In a tightly reasoned discussion of the ethics of war and peace she asserts that war is a gross denial of the core values on which peace depends, and that the Just War theory has failed and deceived us. The book explores alternative ways of confronting aggression and injustice, showing that these are neglected but well proven. Francis argues that our security can be enhanced by the recognition of our shared responsibility for each other and our planet. Practial solutions require a new level of participation in public affairs. Recent events have shown that this is possible. Francis outlines the steps we must take to bring about the radical shift so urgently needed.

EASTERN CAULDRON
The route to any coherent understanding of our time runs through the issues addressed in this collection of essays: the political meaning of Islam, the relation of the West to the Islamic world, the new form of imperialism signaled first by the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan and now by the U.S. occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq, the intractable conflict over Palestine. This volume brings together Gilbert Achcar’s major writings on these issues over the past decades. Achcar’s introductory essay, reflecting on the aftermath of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, integrates these analyses in a major new account of the strategy of U.S. imperialism in the Middle East and its prospects. Achcar’s analyses are supple and inventive, and consistently informed by reflection on rival traditions of political thought and a deep knowledge of the region.

GLOBAL CORRUPTION REPORT 2004
With a focus on political corruption, the 2004 edition of Transparency International’s Global Corruption Report (GCR) identifies some of today’s most pressing issues in the fight against corruption around the world. Essays examine the role of money in politics — assessing the regulation of political party financing, suggesting ways to “rewire” the arms and oil trades for greater transparency and analysing the problem of vote buying. Reports consider attempts to repatriate assets stolen by politicians, disclosure regulations, the nexus between the media, politics and business as well as the issue of immunity from prosecution — with special insight into extradition efforts in the Fujimori case in Peru. The GCR’s/i global and regional reports explore recent developments such as the African Union convention against corruption, the EU accession process and the UN convention against corruption. Thirty-five country reports provide a critical assessment of new national anti-corruption legislation, institutional reform and the most important corruption-related issues of the last 12 months. This year’s GCR also features special contributions by Jimmy Carter and former UN human rights commissioner Mary Robinson, who argues that “corruption hits hardest at the poorest in society”. Their messages are reinforced by those of Luis Moreno Ocampo, chief prosecutor at the International Criminal Court, and Gherardo Colombo, whose efforts to prosecute Italian premier Silvio Berlusconi for bribery have drawn substantial media attention. Rounding out the report, a data and research section presents Transparency International’s own Corruption Perceptions Index as well as other recent empirical research, including links between corruption, gender and poverty.

TELL ME LIES
A critique of government propaganda and media distortion of the attack on Iraq, this book aims to destroy the idea that the mainstream media has anything to do with objectivity and balance. The propaganda machinery of the UK and US in the Iraq war is exposed as fundamentally dishonest and as a significant threat to freedom of thought and expression. The book draws on the experience of leading anti-war and media activists to provide analysis and guidance on how to resist the media war.

BARBARIANS & CIVILIZATION IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
The terrorist attacks in New York and Washington have led to popular conceptions of Muslims as terrorists. Some commentators have harked back to the “Clash of Civilizations” argument outlined by Samuel Huntington which has become a touchstone in postcolonial studies. Huntington argued that, after the collapse of the Cold War, culture would become the main axis of conflict for civilizational alliances. Mark Salter takes issue with Huntington’s theory and explains how the terms of his argument are part of an imperialist discourse that casts other civilizations as essentially barbarian. This text offers a decisive exploration of the colonial rhetoric inherent in current political discourse. Charting the usefulness of concepts of culture and identity for understanding world politics, the author illustrates the benefits and limitations of the civilized/barbarian dichotomy.

THE BEST DEMOCRACY MONEY CAN BUY
Award-winning investigative journalist Greg Palast digs deep to unearth the ugly facts that few reporters working anywhere in the world today have the courage or ability to cover. From East Timor to Waco, he has exposed some of the most egregious cases of political corruption, corporate fraud, and financial manipulation in the US and abroad. His uncanny investigative skills as well as his no-holds-barred style have made him an anathema among magnates on four continents and a living legend among his colleagues and his devoted readership. This exciting new collection brings together some of Palast’s most powerful writing of the past decade. Included here are his celebrated “Washington Post” exposé on Jeb Bush and Katherine Harris’s stealing of the presidential election in Florida, and recent stories on George W. Bush’s payoffs to corporate cronies, the payola behind Hillary Clinton, and the faux energy crisis. Also included in this volume are new and previously unpublished material, television transcripts, photographs and letters.

CENTRAL ASIA AFTER THE EMPIRE
The Central Asian republics of the former Soviet Union gained autonomy in 1991. Hidden from the West for so long, little is known about Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Now, in the post-Cold War era, the shifts of power taking place within these oil-rich republics will be keenly observed by the West and by neighboring economies such as China, Turkey and Iran. The region’s development as an economic force will be of still greater importance for Russia. This volume provides the first succinct, introductory overview in English of the peoples, economy, politics and religion of the Central Asian republics; the role of the region in the global arena and the potential impact on the military, political, demographic and economic balance of forces in Asia. The authors provide an analysis of the current situation and prospects for the newly emerged republics in the light of the region’s immense mineral wealth and oil reserve and the long history of Islamic faith in the republics.
