In this series of illuminating essays, Claire Chambers explores global literature, with a special focus on texts from Pakistan and its diaspora. Highlighting its quality and urgency, and authors? bold treatment of hot topics like Islamophobia, racism, and the culture industry, Chambers formulates a strong case for drawing this writing into the mainstream English canon. Chambers? voice is incisive and compelling as she analyses emerging as well as established writers working in various genres. This makes Rivers of Ink a necessary, clear summons for expansion to the field of contemporary global literature.

OTHER DAYS , “A novel with a difference. Minimalist in approach, it is a playground for a subject seldom addressed in our part of the world. The novel pays special attention to the actual workings of social organization. With assured authenticity and delicate intimacy, characters are drawn to interact with shadows, which admit of much symbolic significance. Destinations are pursued with disastrous outcomes, yet compassion reigns and quiet dignity comes out unscathed.” Amin Mughal A chance meeting of two Pakistani immigrants living in the UK, on New Year’s Eve of 2000, triggers the memories they had been trying to evade since they left Sheher in 1970s. Dreams. Kinship. Metanarratives. Sheher was calling them again. Arshad Waheed’s first novel “Gumaan” was published in 1995.He has also translated the works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Milan Kundera. He studied policy at London School of Economics. He lives in Islamabad.

The Essence of Rumi’s Masnevi It is a remarkable research in English on Rumi that covers the period in which Rumi lived and the teachings of Rumi’s father, his disciple Brurhaneddin Tirmizi and Rumi’s Master Shams. This is a very rare book written by Professor Turkmen a naturalized Turkish citizen on the life and works of the Sufi poet Jalaluddin Rumi. The book covers the usual biography of Rumi, his family, his teachers and his works before them covering translation and commentary of Rumi?s most famous works, The Masnavi. An important contribution to Masnevi studies was done by Erkan Turkman. It includes several introductory chapters with much new information. The body of the work contains excerpts from the Masnevi in Persian script, each of which is followed by two short paragraphs in English: the first is not a word-forword literal translation, but part translation and part paraphrase of the verses. The second paragraph in each selection gives some relevant explanations, drawn from commentaries in Turkish, Ottoman Turkish, Persian, Urdu, and English. It is an excellent book that should be on the book shelf of any student of the teachings of Rumi or of Persian or Turkish literature.

A small Karachi neighbourhood, Chakiwara is humdrum and unspectacular to all appearances. But inside its shops and at the street corners, there is curious business afoot. He has his eyes on out-of-work comedian Chakori, apprentice to a Chinese dentist, even as the town?s mostly unsuccessful healer of physical and spiritual maladies prepares to unleash his top-secret invention, the love meter. Muhammad Khalid Akhtar presents a world at once familiar and peculiar but always surprising, his unforgettable characters keeping alive the old ways in a quietly changing Karachi in post-independence Pakistan. In modern, beautiful Green City, gender selection, war and a virus outbreak have brought the ratio of men to women to alarmingly low levels. The government uses terror and technological surveillance to control its people, and women must take multiple husbands to have children as quickly as possible. Yet there are women who resist, women who live in an underground collective and refuse to be part of the system. Secretly protected by the highest echelons of power, they emerge only at night, to provide to the rich and elite of Green City a type of commodity that nobody can buy: intimacy without sex. As it turns out, not even the most influential men can shield them from discovery and the dangers of ruthless punishment. This dystopian novel from one of Pakistan?s most talented writers is a modern-day parable. It takes the patriarchal practices of female seclusion, gender selection and control over women?s bodies, and recasts them to imagine a world of terrifying postreligious authoritarianism.

Dozakhnama: Conversations in Hell is an extraordinary novel, a biography of Manto and Ghalib and a history of Indian culture rolled into one. Exhumed from dust, Manto’s unpublished novel surfaces in Lucknow. Is it real or is it a fake? In this dastan, Manto and Ghalib converse, entwining their lives in shared dreams. The result is an intellectual journey that takes us into the people and events that shape us as a culture. As one writer describes it, I discovered Rabisankar Bal like a torch in the darkness of the history of this subcontinent. This is the real story of two centuries of our own country. Rabisankar Bal’s audacious novel, told by reflections in a mirror and forged in the fires of hell, is both an oral tale and a shield against oblivion. An echo of distant screams. Inscribed by the devil’s quill, Dozakhnama is an outstanding performance of subterranean memory.

In HIPPIE, his most autobiographical novel to date, Paulo Coelho takes us back in time to re-live the dream of a generation that longed for peace and dared to challenge the established social order – authoritarian politics, conservative modes of behavior, excessive consumerism, and an unbalanced concentration of wealth and power. Following the “three days of peace and music” at Woodstock, the 1969 gathering in Bethel, NY that would change the world forever, hippie paradises began to emerge all around the world. In the Dam Square in Amsterdam, long-haired young people wearing vibrant clothes and burning incense could be found meditating, playing music and discussing sexual liberation, the expansion of consciousness and the search for an inner truth. They were a generation refusing to live the robotic and unquestioning life that their parents had known. At this time, Paulo is a young, skinny Brazilian with a goatee and long, flowing hair who wants to become a writer. He sets off on a journey in search of freedom and a deeper meaning for his life: first, with a girlfriend, on the famous “Death Train to Bolivia,” then on to Peru and later hitchhiking through Chile and Argentina. His travels take him further, to the famous square in Amsterdam, where Paulo meets Karla, a Dutch woman also in her 20s. She convinces Paulo to join her on a trip to Nepal, aboard the Magic Bus that travels across Europe and Central Asia to Kathmandu. They embark on a journey in the company of fascinating fellow travelers, each of whom has a story to tell, and each of whom will undergo a transformation, changing their priorities and values, along the way. As they travel together, Paulo and Karla explore their own relationship, an awakening on every level that brings each of them to a choice and a decision that sets the course for their lives thereafter.
