  • THE ORIGINS AND EARLY DEVELOPMENT OF SHIA ISLAM

Backed with thorough and original research, this book is a study of Shi?a Islam based mainly on the oldest historical sources, rather than on heresiographical works, thus filling a serious gap in the field of academic study. Here, the author has reconstructed and presented the development of an Islamic ideal in the form of Shi?ism: that of a particular vision of religious leadership which derives its authority directly from the person of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and which, therefore, enjoys divine sanction in deciding all cases of conscience. Presented here is a rare confluence of traditional and critical scholarship, leading to the emergence of a most authoritative and comprehensive account of a crucial development in the formative period of Islamic history. This is both a theological and sociological study. The chapters on the abdication of Imam Hasan (RA) and the social structure of the city of Kufa, present new material and interpretation.

In a nutshell, his talent encompass[es] a complete grasp of the subject, a flawless writing style and a method of presentation meeting Western standards of dispassionate inquiry?should be considered the best book on the subject?

?[This] is without doubt a very precious and welcome addition to the literature of Sh?ia Islam? The theme of this book is immense. The secular historian will find here a reservoir of accurate facts which may help to correct the inaccuracies and distortions which mar even learned works of intensive research.
    Islamic Studies

The fact that the study has drawn heavily on historical sources of both Shi?a and Sunni persuasions, as opposed to merely heresiographical writings, gives credence to the work and brings to light some findings hitherto obscure to scholars? The book is not merely a history of Shi?a Islam, but also a source of researched and analytical information on a variety of historical topics?

  • THE ESSENCE OF RUMI’S MASNEVI

The Essence of Rumi’s Masnevi It is a remarkable research in English on Rumi that covers the period in which Rumi lived and the teachings of Rumi’s father, his disciple Brurhaneddin Tirmizi and Rumi’s Master Shams. This is a very rare book written by Professor Turkmen a naturalized Turkish citizen on the life and works of the Sufi poet Jalaluddin Rumi. The book covers the usual biography of Rumi, his family, his teachers and his works before them covering translation and commentary of Rumi?s most famous works, The Masnavi. An important contribution to Masnevi studies was done by Erkan Turkman. It includes several introductory chapters with much new information. The body of the work contains excerpts from the Masnevi in Persian script, each of which is followed by two short paragraphs in English: the first is not a word-forword literal translation, but part translation and part paraphrase of the verses. The second paragraph in each selection gives some relevant explanations, drawn from commentaries in Turkish, Ottoman Turkish, Persian, Urdu, and English. It is an excellent book that should be on the book shelf of any student of the teachings of Rumi or of Persian or Turkish literature.

  • MORAL ATMOSPHERES

Lahore?s Hall Road is the largest electronics market in Pakistan. Once the center of film and media piracy in South Asia, it now specializes in smartphones and accessories. For Hall Road?s traders, conflicts between the economic promises and the moral dangers of film loom large. To reconcile their secular trade with their responsibilities as devoted Muslims, they often look to adjudicate the good or bad moral ?atmosphere? (mahaul) that can cling to film and media.

Timothy P. A. Cooper examines the diverse and coexisting moral atmospheres that surround media in Pakistan, tracing public understandings of ethical life and showing how they influence economic behavior. Drawing on extensive ethnographic work among traders, consumers, collectors, archivists, cinephiles, and cinephobes, Moral Atmospheres explores varied views on what the relationship between film and faith should look, sound, and feel like for Pakistan?s Muslim-majority public. Cooper considers the preservation and censorship of film in and outside of the state bureaucracy, contestations surrounding heritage and urban infrastructure, and the production and circulation of sound and video recordings among the country?s religious minorities. He argues that a focus on atmosphere provides ways of seeing moral thresholds as mutable and affective, rather than as fixed ethical standpoints. At once a vivid ethnography of a market street and a generative theorization of atmosphere, this book offers fresh perspectives on moral experience and the relationship between religion and media.

  • THE PROMISE OF PIETY

In The Promise of Piety, Arsalan Khan examines the zealous commitment to a distinct form of face-to-face preaching (dawat) among Pakistani Tablighis, practitioners of the transnational Islamic piety movement the Tablighi Jamaat. This group says that Muslims have abandoned their religious duties for worldly pursuits, creating a state of moral chaos apparent in the breakdown of relationships in the family, nation, and global Islamic community. Tablighis insist that this dire situation can only be remedied by drawing Muslims back to Islam through dawat, which they regard as the sacred means for spreading Islamic virtue. In a country founded in the name of Muslim identity and where Islam is ubiquitous in public life, the Tablighi claim that Pakistani Muslims have abandoned Islam is particularly striking.

The Promise of Piety shows how Tablighis constitute a distinct form of pious relationality in the ritual processes and everyday practices of dawat and how pious relationality serves as a basis for transforming domestic and public life. Khan explores both the promise and limits of the Tablighi project of creating an Islamic moral order that can transcend the political fragmentation and violence of life in postcolonial Pakistan.

  • ISLAM IN CENTRAL ASIA AND THE CAUCASUS SINCE THE FALL OF THE SOVIET UNION

With the end of the Soviet Union in 1991, a major turning point in all former Soviet republics, Central Asian and Caucasian countries began to reflect on their history and identities. As a consequence of their opening up to the global exchange of ideas, various strains of Islam and trends in Islamic thought have nourished the Islamic revival that had already started in the context of glasnost and perestroika?from Turkey, Iran, the Arabian Peninsula, and from the Indian subcontinent; the four regions with strong ties to Central Asian and Caucasian Islam in the years before Soviet occupation.

Bayram Balci seeks to analyse how these new Islamic influences have reached local societies and how they have interacted with pre-existing religious belief and practice. Combining exceptional erudition with rare first-hand research, Balci?s book provides a sophisticated account of both the internal dynamics and external influences in the evolution of Islam in the region.

  • THE LIFE OF THE QUR’AN

Over a billion copies of the Qur’an exist yet it remains an enigma. Its classical Arabic language resists simple translation, and its non-linear style of abstract musings defies categorization. • AFTER THE PROPHET

In this gripping narrative history, Lesley Hazleton tells the tragic story at the heart of the ongoing rivalry between the Sunni and Shia branches of Islam, a rift that dominates the news now more than ever.

Even as Muhammad lay dying, the battle over who would take control of the new Islamic nation had begun, beginning a succession crisis marked by power grabs, assassination, political intrigue, and passionate faith. Soon Islam was embroiled in civil war, pitting its founder?s controversial wife Aisha against his son-in-law Ali, and shattering Muhammad?s ideal of unity.

Combining meticulous research with compelling storytelling, After the Prophet explores the volatile intersection of religion and politics, psychology and culture, and history and current events. It is an indispensable guide to the depth and power of the Shia?Sunni split.
