About the Author

Anthony Low was Professor of History and Founding Dean, School of African and Asian Studies, University of Sussex, 1964- 72; Director, Research School of Pacific Studies, The Australian National University, 1973-75; Vice-Chancellor, The Australian National University, 1975-82; Smuts Professor (now Emeritus) of the History of the British Commonwealth, University of Cambridge. 1983-94; and President of Clare Hall, Cambridge, 1987-94. His many publications include Buganda in Modern History (1971), Lion rampant (1973), Eclipse of Empire (1991) and The Egalitarian Moment: Asia and Africa 1950-1980 (1996). Professor Low is Vice-President of the Australian Academy of the Humanities and Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia.
