About the Author

Beatrice F. Manz is Associate Professor of History at Tufts University, specializing in the history of Iran and Central Asia in the medieval and modern periods. She is the author of 'The Rise and fall of Tamerlane' and numerous articles in scholarly journals. Her major interests lie in the structure of nomad societies, nomad-sedentary relations, and the political dynamics of plural societies.
