About the Author

Francois Rabelais began his adult life in a Franciscan monastery. However he soon rejected the monastic life, favouring instead a career in medicine. He lectured in medicine around Europe, and also turned his hand to writing. His stories, based on local folk lore, of an imaginary world of giants were instantly condemned as obscene and banned by the authorities. Today they are regarded as some of the key works of French Renaissance literature. Paul Bailey has so far written eight novels, a memoir, a biography and edited several anthologies. He is also a frequent contributor to Radio and TV and works as a critic and reviewer for the Times Literary Supplement and other newspapers.
