About the Author

Katherine Mansfield is remembered as the initiator of the modern short story. An outsider herself by geography and temperament, she used her writing to express a sense of alienation and introspection. Eschewing traditional methods of plotting in her stories, she wrote of atmosphere and internal struggle, and although she lacked the reputation of a truly great writer during her own lifetime, she is now regarded as one of the pioneers of modern English literature.
