About the Author

SHIRIN R. TAHIR-KHELI is a Senior Fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute. During the Reagan administration, she served on the State Department Policy Planning Staff and the N _oval Security Council (NSC). At the NSC she served first as Director of Political-Military Affairs and later as Director of Near East and South Affairs. Under President Bush, she was appointed an Ambassador at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations and served as the Alternate Representative for Special Political Affairs. She also served as a member of the National Advisory Council on the Public Service appointed by President Bush. Dr Tahir-Kheli was a Fellow at the Center of International Studies at Princeton University from 1993 to 1995. She has written and edited numerous publications on South Asia and the Persian Gulf region, including "United States and Pakistan: The Evolution of an Influence Relationship" (1982)
