About the Author

ASMA BARLAS, one of the first Pakistani women to be appointed to the country’s foreign services, was dismissed from her post by the Pakistani dictator General Zia ul-Haq. In the mid-1980s she left Pakistan for the US, where she is now a Professor at the Political Science Department of Ithaca College, New York. She is the author of a path-breaking book, Believing Women in Islam: Unreading Patriarchal Interpretations of the Qur’an (University of Texas Press, 2002) and has written extensively on religion and strained relations between Islam and the West.
