About the Author

Endora Welty was born in 1909 in Jackson, Mississippi where she lived almost all her life, in the house built by her family. She was educated locally and at Mississippi State College for Women, the University Wisconsin, and the Columbia University Graduate School 0f Business. Her short stories appeared in many magazines, including The Southern Review, The Atlantic Monthly, Harper’s Bazaar, and The New Yorker, and were published in four volumes, A Curtain of Green (1941), The Wide Net (1943), The Golden Apples (1949), and The Bride of the Innisfallen (1955), before being reissued as The Collected Stories in 1980. She is also the author of five novels—The Robber Bridegroom (1942), Delta Wedding (1946), The Ponder Heart (1954), Losing Battles (1970), and The Optimist’s Daughter (1972)—along with a volume of essays, The Eye of the Story (1978); two books of photographs One Time, One Place: Mississippi in the Depression (1971) and Photographs (1989); and a memoir, One Writer” Beginnings (1984). Among the most honored of American writers, she received the National Medal for literature, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Howells Medal, the National Institute of Arts and Letters Gold Medal for the Novel, the Pulitzer Prize, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom; as well as honorary degrees from V21e University, Harvard University the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Washington University. In 1998 she became the first living writer to be included in the prestigious Library of America series of works by American literary giants. Eudora Welty died at the age of 92 on July 23, 2001, at a hospital near her home.
