The tragedy of Bosnia-Hercegovina highlights the potential for acute conflict in the Balkans involving Islamic communities. Although the Ottoman empire underwent a steady decline and retreat in the Balkans in the nineteenth century, leading to its final demise in the early part of the twentieth, large communities of Muslims — derived both from those who arrived with the Ottomans and those who converted to the religion of the new rulers — remained in the new successor states of Southeastern Europe.
As well as detailing the position of the large Muslim communities like the Kosovo Albanians and the Turks of Bulgaria the book also details the current situation of less-known Muslim communities like the Pomaks, which have rarely been studied.
