About the Author
John Buchan, Scottish novelist, biographer and statesman, was born in Perth in 1875. Educated at Brasenose College, Oxford, he was called to the Bar, worked in South Africa on the staff of the High Commission, and on his return, became a journalist. He was elected to Parliament in 1927 and held the position till 1935 when he was appointed the Governor General of Canada. His first novel, Prester John was published in 1910. He became famous as a writer of adventure stories with the publication of his Richard Hannay books. The Thirty-nine Steps was written while he was confined in bed by illness.
