About the Author

The translator, Shoaib Ghaffar, is a petroleum engineer by training but a lifelong student of Persian and Urdu poetry. Now, at 92, he brings to this work a vast and deeply personal reading of Saadi, having first encountered the poet as a child in 1940s Hyderabad. This book is the fruit of eight decades of listening, learning, and living with Saadi’s poetry. Among its unique features are over 100 of Saadi’s Arabic couplets, gathered here in one place for the first time.
