Wilcox put his account into context with a brief review of American policy in South Asia from 1945 through 1969 and the rise of Russian and Chiness influence on the subcontinent in the wake of the sion-indian border war of 1962. He then weaves a trenchant assessment of U.S. South-Asian policy during 1971 into his story of the fast-moving events that led to the dismemberment of Pakistan and the formation of the new nation of Bangladesh. Wilcox concludes with an urgent call for a redefinition of American policy toward the South Asian subcontinent, offering some realistic policy prescriptions toward India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Wayne Wilcox is professor of government and research member of the Institute of War and Peace Studies and the Southern Asian Institute, Columbia University. He is currently on leave From Columbia, serving as Cultural Attache in the U.S. Embassy, London.
