The Teaching of English in Pakistan appraises the quality of English Language Teaching at the tertiary level. The study researches five major colleges of Lahore and presents its findings on the quality of the syllabus, the teaching methodology and the examination system. It emphasizes the need for a change to a communicative task based approach while teaching compulsory English to Intermediate and Graduate students. About the Author

FARIDA JAVED MALIK is an Assistant Professor at the Department of English, University of the Punjab. With a First Class First in MA in English Literature from the Punjab University, she has had a distinctive academic career. She later (1 989) proceeded to the Centre for Applied Language Studies at the Reading University, UK, and obtained an MA in TEFL. She is the Convenor of the Postgraduate ELT Diploma course, an afternoon annual part-time training course for English teachers run by the Punjab University. She is also the Editor of the "Journal of English Language Teaching and Studies", a publication of the Department of English, Punjab University. Her areas of specialization include Modern American poetry, the 20th century British novel as well as Teacher Education and Syllabus Design in Applied Linguistics.
