About the Author

Gönül Dönmez-Colin is a writer, researcher and lecturer. She has graduated from the American College for Girls in Istanbul and the University of Istanbul, Department of Philology and completed her post-graduate studies at the Concordia and McGill Universities in Montreal, Canada. She has taught in Montreal and Hong Kong and has done field research in Iran, Turkey, India and Central Asia. Among her books in English are: Women, Islam and Cinema (2004), Cinemas of North Africa and Central Asia (ed.) (2006) and Turkish Cinema and Politics of Identity (forthcoming 2007). She has written the Central Asia section of The Companion Encyclopedia of Middle Eastern and North African Film (2001), Turkey and Greece sections of Die Siebte Kunst Auf Dem Pulverfass: Balkan Film (1996) and the Cinema section of The World of Islam (forthcoming 2007). She has been a regular contributor to Le Monde Diplomatique, Central Asian Survey, Cinemaya Asian Film Quarterly, Blimp, Kinema: A Journal for Film and Audiovisual Media and the Turkish national daily, Cumhuriyet. Her work has been translated into nine languages. She has served on the juries of international film festivals and has curated programs on national cinemas. She is the artistic advisor of Mannheim-Heidelberg International Film Festival (Germany) and Kerala International Film Festival (India).
